A Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Blog in 2026

Starting a blog is a great way to reach other like-minded people, share your thoughts, ideas and passions, and it can also be a great source of income if you put the right time and effort into it. And it has never been easier to start a blog, even if you have zero technical experience.

It’s important to start a blog the right way though because it can be pretty competitive. Lucky for you, we’re going to make it super simple for you in this step-by-step guide.

So, let’s start a blog! Here are the steps we’ll be taking:

Step 1: Pick your blog topic

The first very important thing you’ve got to do to start a blog is to pick your topic. Now, this may sound obvious, but you want to consider this carefully! There’s a lot of competition out there between blogs. When you’re deciding the topic of your blog you want to think about 2 things–

  1. Why do you want to start a blog?
Is this a creative outlet, is it to teach readers something, a source of income, to establish your authority on a subject, or to build a community? There are lots of reasons to start a blog. It’s just important that you identify what your reason is.
  2. What’s your niche?
The subject of your blog can be literally anything that you want it to be. Successful blogs tend to focus on one, specific subject. The more specific your subject is, the easier it will be to find the right audience.

The most important thing is to pick a blog topic that you’re passionate about!

If you’re not excited to write for your blog then it’s not going to work, but if you’re passionate about your topic then you’re going to engage with your audience and actually enjoy the process of writing for your blog. That’s an essential part of making your blog a success.

How to Pick a Blog Name

Once you’ve figured out your blog topic, you’ve got to pick a name. You want your blog’s name to:

  • be unique
  • be relevant to your topic
  • appeal to your audience

You should also consider whether or not your blog’s name will be available for your domain. (Picking your domain name is part of the next step!)

2. Set up your blog

There are lot of different blogging platforms out there, but we strongly recommend you use self-hosted WordPress for your blog.

Why You Should Use WordPress for Your Blog

WordPress is the most popular blogging platform in the world, by far. In the United States, 94% of blogs are built with WordPress. That means that WordPress has the most resources and the largest community. WordPress is free, it’s fully customizable, and it gives you full control over your site. Using WordPress for your blog is really a no-brainer.

However, there are TWO WordPresses, and it’s important to know the difference! There is WordPress.com, which is “hosted,” and WordPress.org, which is “self-hosted.”

The Difference Between Hosted WordPress & Self-Hosted WordPress

There are a lot of differences between a hosted WordPress site & a self-hosted one. Although a hosted blog is free and a self-hosted blog is not, it really all comes down to freedom and how much control you’ll have over your blog. Take a look for yourself:

Hosted WordPress Self-Hosted WordPress
Free $70+ / yr
Quick to set up Slower to set up
No maintenance Needs maintenance
Limited size Unlimited size
Limited design choices Unlimited design choices
Limited ways to extend Unlimited options
Cannot have an online store Can have an online store
Restricted monetization Monetization freedom

A self-hosted WordPress blog is going to give you unlimited freedom to design and change and grow however you want. A hosted WordPress simply can’t do the same things.

If you want to just casually blog without too much setup you can try out WordPress.com, Blogger.com, Tumblr.com, etc., but if you want to set your blog up for real success and have control over it then you should go with a hosted WordPress site. A self-hosted WordPress site is more work, but it’s worth the effort.

Set Up Your Blog’s Hosting & Domain

Since we’re going with a self-hosted blog, that means we need hosting and a domain. There are a lot of hosting provider options out there! You can read about the best WordPress hosting options for 2026 here.

We recommend Bluehost to start a blog. They have special deals on hosting plans that start as low as $2.95 per month. (Around $8 per month is pretty standard for hosting fees when you’re just getting started.) Some hosts, like Bluehost, will also give you a free domain name for a year when you sign up for hosting. Getting your hosting & domain from the same place is the easiest option for setting everything up, so it’s great to pick hosting that will bundle them.

No matter which hosting provider you choose, there will be different levels of hosting plans. Bluehost’s shared plan is the simplest and cheapest option and great if you’re a beginner. As your website grows you’ll probably want to upgrade your plan down the road (which is very easy to do) but we suggest you start with the basic shared hosting option.

When you sign up, Bluehost will have you pick out your domain name. This is where your awesome blog name comes into play — you want your domain to be catchy, easy to remember, and it’s almost always your best bet to choose something that ends in .com.

Have a name in mind already? You can see if it’s available with this domain search tool:

Steps to Sign Up With Bluehost

Head over to Bluehost.com and Click "Host Your Site"

1) Head over to Bluehost.com and Click “Host Your Site”

Pick the plan that is right for you.

2) Pick the plan that is right for you. We recommend the Basic Plan for new blogs and beginners (you can upgrade your plan any time that you need to!)

Search for the domain you want and claim it!

3) Search for the domain you want and claim it! (If you bought a domain through a different company you can also input that on this page.)

Under the 'Package Extras' section we recommend un-ticking all the boxes

4) Fill out your information and billing. Under the ‘Package Extras’ section we recommend un-ticking all the boxes, you don’t really need those add-ons.

Bluehost will have a setup-wizard with 4 easy questions to help you set up your blog.

5) Once you log on, Bluehost will have a setup-wizard with a few easy questions to help you set up your blog. You can pick a theme during this step, or you can do it later.

From Your Bluehost dashboard just click the WordPress button to log in

6) From your Bluehost dashboard click the ‘Log in to WordPress’ button to open up your new WordPress site dashboard!

(You can also log in to your WordPress site by going to yoursitename.com/wp-admin and signing in with the username and password you chose during the Bluehost setup-wizard.)

At this point you should be able to go to your domain to see what your site looks like. There won’t be very much there yet, that’s what our next step is! If the domain doesn’t load, give it a few minutes. It can take a little bit of time for a domain to work when you first set it up.

Step 3: Create your blog content

The most complicated part is over, now it’s time to make your site look awesome. When you open your WordPress blog from Bluehost you’ll be in your site’s dashboard. This is your control center. It’s where you will make all the important decisions for your blog, change the settings, the design, and create great content.

Choose Your Theme

Take a look around the dashboard, and when you’re ready, head over to Appearance > Themes.

A WordPress theme is going to determine what your blog looks like from the layout to the colors to what you can easily add to your blog pages. It’s an important decision. Luckily, with WordPress, you can change your theme as many times as you want. You should still choose carefully, though, because once you have everything designed and built, changing your theme later can be a lot of work. So take some time to explore all your many options and find the perfect theme for you.

How to Install a WordPress Theme

There will be a few default themes in there to start. To add new themes you can either click “Add New” at the top of the page or the big plus sign.

There are hundreds — thousands — of WordPress themes. Many of them are free, some of them you have to pay for. You can search through the recommended and popular themes, or type something into the search bar (“blog” would be a good idea!) to find a theme you love. Just click “Install” and then “Activate” to use a theme on your blog.

Add a WordPress Theme

1) Go to Appearance > Themes then click “Add New”

Search WordPress Themes

2) You can search through thousands of WordPress themes to find the right one for you

Our favorite theme is called Divi. It lets you do amazing things with your WordPress site and is incredibly customizable. This website is built with Divi, just as an example. Divi is a paid theme but it’s very easy to use and we highly recommend it.

Once you have your theme picked out and installed you can go to Appearance > Customize from the dashboard to open the WordPress Customizer. This will let you make some of the initial design choices for your theme like a logo, colors, or general page layout (the options will vary a little bit depending on your theme).

Use the WordPress customizer to customize your site

Go to Appearance > Customize to change the design settings of your theme

Configure Your Blog

You should go through some of the site settings to really optimize your blog. For instance:

  • Settings > General – You can set your site’s title and tagline (a short description of your blog), timezone, and language

  • Settings > Reading – You can pick what your blog’s homepage will be. It can be your recent posts or a page you’ve built– but first you’ll need to build some pages!
  • Settings > Discussion – You can decide whether or not to allow other people to comment on your blog posts.
  • Settings > Permalinks – This setting is for what the URLs (the addresses) of your site will look like for each page and post. We recommend that you choose ‘Post Name’

Create Content for Your Blog

Now we need to make some pages and posts, which are the two main types of content on WordPress.

E
Pages are static content that give your site structure, like the 'Home' page and 'Contact' page.
E
Posts are articles and you can organize them into different categories. They're the juicy part of a good blog!

You’ll usually want to start by making a couple of pages. Most sites will have a homepage, an about page, and a contact page– and because this is a blog, we also want a blog page! (By default WordPress will make your homepage display all your most recent posts, but if you want your own homepage you can create a separate page for your blog posts.)

To add a new page go to Pages > Add New. From there you can give your new page a title, some content like text or images, and when you’re finished you can click “Publish.” It’s the same for posts, just go to Posts > Add New.

Once you’ve created a few pages or posts you can put them into your site’s menu by going to Appearance > Menus.

Write lots of awesome blog posts

Ok, here it is, the key to a successful blog? Have blog posts! Here are some blogging tips that you should keep in mind to really set your blog up for success:

  • Your posts should stick to your niche. As your blog grows over time you can begin to expand, but in the beginning, the more focused on a single topic your content is, the more likely it will stand out from the crowd and attract readers.

  • Quality over quantity! Readers are much more likely to keep reading if you put time and thought into your posts. They are also more likely to share your posts if they are high quality. While that should be reason enough to focus on quality, keep this in mind too– the major search engines get smarter all the time, and they recommend content that is written well and is easy to read.
  • Post regularly. Try to post a couple of times a week, or at the very least, a couple of times a month. Blogs that post regularly get much more traffic and loyal readers.

Rinse and repeat. Keep writing posts and you’ll start to attract readers who are interested in your niche. Congrats on starting your own blog!

Step 4: Promote your awesome blog

Now that you’ve set up your blog and made content for it, you need to start attracting an audience. To do that you need to consider something call “Search Engine Optimization”, or “SEO” for short. Basically, SEO just means best practices to help your blog rank higher in searches on search engines like Google.

SEO Tips

  • Get Backlinks: Backlinks are links on other sites that go to your blog. Getting other sites to link to your content is a great way to promote your blog and improve your SEO. You can sometimes get other sites to link to your content by offering to write a guest post for their blog or simple reaching out to let them know you have content in their niche that their readers may be interested in.
  • Use internal links: Internal links go from one post or page on your blog to another post or page on your blog. This helps Google map out your site and learn where all your content is, which helps it recommend your content through their search engine. In every page or post you make, try to find at least one other page on your site to link to.
  • Use social media: Social media is an awesome way to start attracting readers! When you create new content, post about it on social media.  Include relevant hashtags. When people are looking for information on your blog topic you’ll start to pop up in their social feeds.
  • Post comments: Add comments to other social media posts, blogs or Reddit discussions. Include a link in your comment (make sure you check the rules for whatever feed or site you’re commenting on, as some have rules about what you can and can’t post about.)
  • Use Yoast SEO: You should install a plugin called Yoast SEO that will help you do two important things– it will help you optimize your keywords and it will make it easy to add meta information to your posts and pages.

How to Install the Yoast SEO Plugin

To install Yoast, go to Plugins > Add New. Type “Yoast SEO” into the search bar, then click the button that says “Install Now” on Yoast. When the button text changes to “Activate” click it again. Now when you create or edit a post, you’ll see a new section on the edit page for Yoast SEO. In this new section you can add meta information, add a keyword, and see how easy-to-read your content is. You can also change how the post will show up on Facebook and Twitter when the link is shared.

Type "Yoast SEO" into the search bar, then click the button that says "Install Now" on Yoast. When the button text changes to "Activate" click it again.

Use Yoast to Improve Your SEO

  • Optimize your keywords: ‘Keywords’ are the words or short phrases people type into Google when they’re looking for information. Consider your niche and then come up with a list of things that someone might search for on Google for that topic. This is a great way to start planning what you’ll write about! Pick a keyword from your list and use that to write a post. Try to use your keyword in your content several times. This will help Google recognize your post as being about that topic.
  • Include meta information: The meta information is the text that search engines use to display your blog in their search results. You want to include this on your posts so that your content will look helpful and interesting when people are scrolling through their Google search. The easiest way to add meta information is to use a plugin called Yoast SEO. There’s a free and a paid version of Yoast, but when you’re just getting started the free version will be enough.

Congratulations on starting a blog!

If you’ve made it to this point, you’ve put in a ton of work and you should be very proud of how much you’ve already done to start a blog. Keep writing new posts and promoting your work and your blog will be sure to grow and start to gain traction in your niche. There’s still lots more to learn, but you’ve already learned so much, and that is no small thing. Good luck!
